(Click to enlarge; BACK to return!)
I was down by Giant Springs yesterday and saw something in the water…
Hey, it looks like…
…a fish?
No, two fish. Big fish.
Really big fish.
Cavorting. Frolicking.
These things are four feet long, and as big around as my leg!
Not two, but three or four or more fish!
Wow! It’s a herd of spawning Bigmouth Buffalo!
(OK, I had to look it up. These things are way too big for a fly rod.)
The females lay sticky eggs, and the males swarm around to fertilize them on the plants where they stick. I think this one is just resting a moment. They live ten years.
Yup. Off and frolicking again!
I don’t know when they started, but there were lots of them. I saw them about 10:30 in the morning.  By 2:00pm they were done. One last wave…
…and a splash, and they were gone.
