From the Orchid Gardens we traveled on to the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. Â Here are some vents along side the road.
The Dailylife Wife at the Museum/Observation Point.
This is the Halema’uma’i Crater. Â Part of the Kilauea Caldera, it has been actively venting since March of 2008. Â This time. Â It has been active a quite a few times in the recent past!
We never got to anywhere we could see hot lava.

A quick bit of color…
This is a lava field we stopped at.
(Another panorama!)
Two sides of one lava rock.
And there is still life in the middle of all this lava!

This is the Kilauea Iki Crater. Â It erupted for 17 days back in November, 1959. Â You can actually hike across this one, and there are vents to show it is still pretty hot under there! Â If you look at the enlarged image, you can see a “bathtub ring” around the crater. Â That is how high the lava lake got, and it has subsided since then.
(Another panorama!)
Here are details of the sign explaining it all. Â Sorry about the shadows, but the sun was actually out!
The fountain of lave was 1900 feet high!
And here is the story. Â (Click to enlarge; BACK to return!)
And here is some of the variety of flora around the Kilauea Iki Crater.
