The Libby Dam project formed Lake Koocanusa, which stretches from the Dam north into Canada. Â This obvious Indian name is a actually a contraction of Kootenai-Canada-USA, this being Kootenai Country, and the Kootenai River, and of course the two countries that the Lake is in.

The highway follows the side of Lake Koocanusa from the Dam north to Eureaka. Â Just a ways down from Eureak there is a bridge across the Lake. Â It is a shortcut to reach Yaak and the surrounding country.

What is significant to me is not just that the bridge allows access to some really fun motorcycle roads, but way back in the days when the dam was being finished, and the river valley had been logged off, we drove down the old highway along the river one last time before they shut the spillways and filled the Lake. Â Driving UNDER this bridge is a significant childhood memory for me. Â It was an awe inspiring sight, at least.
