The northern terminus of the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
Downtown Silverton.
(This page is a mix of the Dailylife Wife’s photos and mine…)
One of the fun looking places there. Â Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to try it out…
Driving up to the end of town, I found a sort-of-underground house.
Interesting.
What is that whistling I hear?
 That smell of coal smoke?
Yup! The Durango and Silverton has reached town!
My Dad and I rode the 45 miles up here from Durango back in 1998.
After they let the passengers off in the middle of the street for a couple of hours, so they can shop the town dry, the train backs up to the “wye” to turn around, before backing up to this same place to let the passengers back on before the trip back to Durango.

Just a little bit of the narrow gauge yard they have here.
A view back down to Silverton as we were leaving.
You can see where the train backs up.
An closer view from the photo above. Â You can see most of the “wye” on the right end of the photo. Â that is how you turn a train around without a loop or a turntable.
