Day 180: meanwhile, back in Alaska…

Sorry to jerk this blog out of order, but that last was an important announcement.  There may be another one coming soon…

But in Ketchikan we got off the ship to see the town and a Totem Pole village.

And of course, my favorite lifeboats: the single keel for lots of people and the catamaran, extra stable and used as a water taxi when the ship can’t reach the dock for some reason (oh, say: too many cruise ships!

There is a park on the waterfront welcoming people to Ketchikan.  It has this Eagle statue bowing to the people coming to town.  Of course, if you look at it from the other side there is a face there too…

These were taken on our bus ride through town on the way to the Totem Pole village.

This is Whale Park, and our first Totem Pole.  I only recall a few of the things they are suppose to mean.

I think this horse drawn coach is actually a better way to see town, other than being subjected to more of the driver’s bad jokes…

There is all kinds of neat stuff in Ketchikan, on fish hatcheries, salmon spawning runs, the red light district over the creeks full of salmon.  I didn’t photos of that stuff…cruise ships are a great way to travel and see places, but they do run on a tight schedule…

But this is apparently the only tunnel in the US that you can drive Around…

…Over…

…Under…

…and Through, of course.  We did the around and through, and saw over.  I had to take the bus driver’s word there is a way under, at low tide, anyway!

Some of the streets in Ketchikan started out as stairways, and still remain as streets.  This is Barber Street.  You can see the side street part way up this one heading to the left is named Bayview Street.

It is wise to know where your friends are moving too before you volunteer to help them move…!
